Candice's adventure

As I sit and write this blog about my local NYC hot spots & the fun that I'm having in NYC.... my dear friend from high school, Candice, is gearing up to go to Rwanda to work for Millennium Promise Org. (http://www.millenniumpromise.org) She will be a Business Development consultant for this really cool NGO (non-government association) company with an amazing vision. It is a little bit like a micro-finance company though instead of paying in money they trade goods/products.

Kudos to Candice who is an active contributor for our generation. I admire you.

and Candice... you know how I like to pay you visits on the other side of the world. These digs might be a little different than Happy Valley, HK.

You never cease to amaze!

Good luck AND start your own blog. ;)

1st Birthday in NYC!

I am finally emerging from the haze that has surrounded me all morning.... It has been a rough day after my 28th birthday celebration last night, but it was all worth it. No pain no gain, right? Go big or go home.... Those two phrases continuously rolled around my head this morning.

Yesterday was amazing! I only have my wonderful friends to thank for making my 1st birthday in New York a memorable one. I had the pleasure of eating lunch with Sima and Angie at the Chelsea Markets...Good thing my day was mostly consumed by me transferring my information from my PC to Mac, fielding birthday phone calls and emails, and eating sweets. My MAC is finally set up and I am now able to get some work completed. It has definitely been an uphill battle all day today.

My evening began as I sat on Greenwich Ave in the pouring rain desperately waiting for a taxi (ugh! I was definitely wanting my car back then.). I was waiting for the birthday gods to bless me with a yellow light. After stomping 5 blocks down Greenwich Ave I managed to squeeze myself in front of an angry Smith Barney Banker who was also soaked and desperate. After he started yelling obscenities at me, in my high pitch, voice I proclaimed- "it's my birthday!!!"... as I jumped in the taxi, shutting the door and telling the cab driver to Go! Go! Go!... I was definitely the last one to arrive at my own party. Of course, I had told all of my friends to MAKE SURE they were on time. 14 of us had dinner at Supper which is a delicious Northern Italian Home Cooking experience. YUMMY!!!!

My lovely Lesley is the sweetest host ever. She went above and beyond to make sure that the table was decorated with beautiful flowers, yummy candies, and that I had candles to blow out. I had all of my favorite New Yorkers with me in one room.... I really felt like the luckiest person in the world to be blessed with so many wonderful, caring, kind, and fun friends. Dinner was fun, the drinks flowed freely, and the food was fabulous.

After dinner the group broke up- it was after all a school night! Several people went home and others continued on with me to The Bowery Hotel. Designers Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson of the Maritime Hotel created a wonderful, relaxed, and opulent lobby bar. We all enjoyed a few more drinks there with ridiculous conversation about friends clothing choices, cleanliness habits, and my favorite... multiple conversations that began with "baby... no!" I must confess that I'm absolutely obsessed with my friends. I think that I have the best friends in the WHOLE world... many of which were not able to share my birthday with me in person, but were all there in spirit. I heard from each and every one of them yesterday.... I'm quite a lucky lady. My family isn't too shabby either, but I would need to start a whole new blog for that.

Okay, back to the events of the evening. I need to wrap this up soon. :)

The majority of the group departed after Bowery to go home and get their beauty rest. Fortunately, I had two dear friends that stayed around for the PARTY... Alex, Sima, and I proceeded to walk to (or rather take a taxi 5 blocks) to The Box. The hot spot that has been raved about by US Weekly, NY Post, and Perez Hilton. I had to see what all the hype was about and what a better night than my very own bday. Alex is a high roller and seems to have all the good connections in the city. After a quick hello and hug to the door girl, the three of us slid by the red velvet rope and walked into an abyss of alternative lower east side creative types. We walked straight up to the bar and ordered 3 patron shots. (We had to keep the evening going in true Sarah style.) The Box is known for it's burlesque show. I was picturing a 40 deuce esque experience... Oh was I mistaken! Sima and I had NO idea what we had gotten ourselves into. In order to keep this blog PG I will not tell you all that we saw, but you should check it out on your own. All I will say is Jermaine Dupri and Janet Jackson seemed to enjoy the show!!! We decided to head out immediately after the show... on to the next location.

As I walked outside, I heard someone yell- SARAH!!! I looked up from my state of birthday bliss and who was getting out of the car in front of me.... no one other than the biggest party goer of all right now little Lindsay Lo and her posse. After a quick hug and hello, she inquired who was inside and based on my response, decided to go see for herself. Don't worry- Alex, Sima and I were on to the next stop: Gold Bar! Okay at this point the night starts to get a little blurry, or at least the cab ride over does.

Gold Bar was the final destination of the evening for Truffle Fries, much needed water, a an amazing dance off experience from our one and only- Sima. She brought back the Sprinkler, MC Hammer, and many more that I had never even seen before. Now THAT girl can dance!! I even think that Penelope Cruz and Lenny Kravitz, who were necking in the banquet next to us, enjoyed Sima's moves. Little did they know how entertained we were by them.

Thank you friends for a truly wonderful birthday. Your generosity, kindness, and love do not go unnoticed. You really made my day a special one and kicked off 28 the right way!

I love you all.

Now back to work I go!!!

It's been quite a week!

I started my weeekend at a Kristen and her friend's F U N birthday party in the East Village. She chose an Anime/Japanese crap theme. Her beautiful apartment was dressed in bright floral designed balloons, ice luge's, 10 large Sake bottles, and a wonderful group of friends...

Saturday night I started out the evening with my college girls + one of their boyfriends at Provence a newly remodeled mainstay in Soho.

Thrillist talks about it here (cut and paste into your browser):

I didn't get a chance to really enjoy the food, but the company was fabulous and the wine scrumptious. I couldn't stay long because Marvelous Maggie was waiting for me at Martignetti. MMM (Marvelous Maggie at Martignetti)!!! :) We danced the night away to an ecclectic mix of 80's music and met some cute new boy-friends.

One week rolled right into the next after the Nor'Easters hit NYC hard early Sunday morning. I stayed in all day and even took a taxi into work on Monday morning... I know. I know. It was the first time. I won't be making a habit out of it.

I met an old friend from my former life at CAA, Jeri Powell, for dinner on Monday night. I chose a cozy French bistro in the West Village on LW 12th and W 10th: Cafe Cluny. This is the most recent installment from the team who opened The Odeon, the Tribeca mainstay where I happened to have brunch on Saturday morning for the 1st time. I love my NYC first's. :)

Last night I caught up with an old friend who runs the Busch Gardens/Sea World Animal Conservatory. She was in town for appearences on several morning shows. But she didn't come alone.. She came with animals!! Not just every day animals, I'm talking wild animals from Australia & Madagascar- Kangaroos, Marsupials, and a BEAVER! Yep. You heard it right, a Beaver in a hotel room in Time Square. Imagine that?!? My friend who travels around the world to rescue animals had NEVER seen a Beaver 1st hand before. Well, don't worry. Kristen S. documented playtime in the Hotel room.

We rounded the fun evening out with yet another culinary delight... this time in midtown at Anthos, a new greek restaurant. (Good thing Chris' best friend is a well known Food Blogger.... check out: eater.com. He is a walking enyclopedia of the best, hottest, and most scrumptious spots in the city) The company was phenomenal! I loved catching up with my old friend and Kristen and Chris always make a meal more fun.

Google/Kaiser the missing snake

Google cannot help but find themselves in the news these days. Whether it be about the hot products we are launching, our soaring stock, the ongoing competition for the most email storage space with Yahoo, our culture, and now the latest addition- Kaiser... the snake that was MIA on the 4th floor really couldn't believe that people in India and Australia were hearing about this story. Is it really "breaking news?" Well, Google is a "hot spot." ;)

ValleyWag broke the story first:

Weekend #2 in NYC

My 2nd weekend in the city was a huge success! It's amazing how much you can do in one weekend... That is when you aren't dealing with a hangover from hell.

My weekend started off right with an amazing class at Kula Yoga (Cassidy we have a date next time you're in the city) from Jillian. Jillian happens to be dating one of my old Maha teachers- Ted McDonald. ah the small world of yoga. After a kick ass 2 hour yoga session I was feeling alive and invigorated.. ready to hit the town and begin my evening.

Thanks to Miss. Sima and all my other fabulous girlfriends, I started the weekend off right. We all met Vino Vino on West Broadway and Franklin (3 blocks from my apartment) for some wine and cheese. The wine was delicious but the combination of Prosecco and Vodka can leave you with a nasty hangover. We all enjoyed several hours of each others company then headed to the "hot spot"- Gold Bar- for more drinking and fun! Sima has all the hookups in this town. ;) After Gold Bar we stumbled around the corner to Bar Matignetti. It was here where the group split up. I was surrounded by Gucci loafers and button downs. I wondered had I stumbled back into St. Louis/ Country Day life for an evening and not remembered?!? It definitely brought me back to high school. After another hour there, I decided to call it a night.

Saturday morning I woke up with a nasty hangover. I managed to pull myself out of bed and go to a noon yoga class where I was restored to normalcy. I must say there is nothing like a few inversions and good ole fashion Vinyasa fun when you're feeling hung over. I do not recommend this cure for everyone. I have been told that I'm a little strange.

Saturday night Hanson and I brought it back to Junior Year in college. We went to watch the UCLA vs. Florida game (it was not pretty for Bruin fans!) at a local bar with some of our fellow Bruins. Before the game, we met at Angels Share in our old stomping grounds of St. Marks/East Village... we were reminded of the cockroaches, tiki lamps, and "the bed." Hanson? Cohen? Now that was a place to forget... of course we will never forget and neither will any of our house guests. Amber? Court? YUCK!!!! I didn't hit any "hot spots" on Saturday night.. other than my bed that I crashed in before the clock struck 2a.

I ended my weekend w more yoga and drinks at Alta with a new friend in the West Village.. great little Italian restaurant on W. 10th. I had Sunday night dinner at The Vila's where Chef Chris made us a delicious Halibut treat... great company and good food. I couldn't have asked for a better Sunday night.

Back to work I am... Tonight I'm going to what will definitely be the "hottest spot" of the week. The Schulhof's Park Ave pad for Pesach dinner. I hope to not be called on to read in Hebrew. Thankfully the Gurkin girls were raised as uber Jews and haven't forgotten a word of Hebrew since their Bat Mitzvah's. I'm a completely different story.

So happy Passover to all my Jewish friends (aka Lesley) and Happy ALMOST Easter to all my non-Jewish friends.
